Torrential Rainfall Hits Chennai and Surrounding Areas, Causing Disruption

The occurrence of intense thunderstorms in and around Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on a Sunday night. These storms brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, providing relief from the previous hot weather. As a result, the government declared a holiday for schools in several districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur. The rainfall was significant, with Meenambakkam receiving 14 cm of rainfall by 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Other areas, such as Taramani and Nandanam, recorded nearly 12 cm of rain, and Chembarambakkam received 11 cm. Nungambakkam received 6 cm, and West Tambaram received 8 cm of rainfall.

The rainfall contributed to the inflow of water into the Chembarambakkam reservoir, which is an important source of water supply for Chennai. The reservoir received about 921 cusecs of rainwater runoff until 6 a.m. on Monday. The Meteorological Department predicts that moderate rains with thunderstorms may continue until Tuesday. Isolated heavy rains are expected in several districts, including Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Tiruchi, and Perambalur until Tuesday.

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings regarding the potential impacts of the rainfall, such as road blockages, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and the possibility of tree branches falling. Consequently, the district collectors of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Chengalpet have declared a holiday for schools in their respective regions.

However, it’s important to note that the information provided reflects a specific event and may not be up-to-date or applicable to the present day, as my knowledge cutoff is in September 2021. It’s always a good idea to check with local news sources or meteorological departments for the most recent and accurate information about weather conditions.
