In an interview with The Indian Express, Sakshi Malik, the Rio Olympics bronze medal-winning wrestler, discussed the reasons why women wrestlers decided to complain about sexual harassment by Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh years after the incidents. She stated that their protest has been hijacked by politicians, farmer groups, and worker unions, but they are determined to fight for justice. Sakshi Malik emphasized that they no longer believe in assurances given to them and have two demands: the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and a clean-up of the federation with new members.
Sakshi Malik mentioned that she has spoken to many women who have shared their stories of suffering and their inability to raise their voices due to fear of repercussions. Over a hundred women from different backgrounds have expressed gratitude for the wrestlers speaking up and have also inspired them with their stories of struggle. The wrestlers met with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur to discuss the issues, including sexual harassment and other problems within the federation. However, they have lost faith in the Oversight Committee, as they feel there has been no tangible result from their complaints. The Oversight Committee asked for proof such as pictures and voice recordings when the victims complained, which the victims argued was not always feasible. They believe that a woman’s statement about being sexually harassed is a form of evidence and that a fair investigation should be conducted by the police.
When asked about why only seven wrestlers filed complaints with the police while twelve appeared before the Oversight Committee, Sakshi Malik explained that not all girls are strong enough to face the consequences of speaking out. Some fear objections from their parents or the judgment of society. Filing a police complaint is a personal choice, and those who decided not to file are still supporting the wrestlers. The decision to come forward with complaints years after the alleged incidents is due to the courage that comes with maturity and realizing the gravity of what happened. Accusing a powerful and well-connected person like Brij Bhushan requires significant courage.
Regarding the police investigations, Sakshi Malik expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace. It took around six days for an FIR to be registered after the complaints were filed, and the probe is still ongoing. She suspects that there may be pressure on the police to protect Brij Bhushan due to his influence and power.
Addressing allegations of politicizing the protests, Sakshi Malik refuted the claims, stating that these are diversionary tactics aimed at undermining their cause. She clarified that the protesting wrestlers do not support any political party and that their fight for justice transcends state and religious boundaries.
