National Security Ministry's Electronic Unit Receives Additional Equipment to Enhance Capacity

According to Lawrence Hinds, the Deputy Manager of the National Security Ministry’s electronic unit, additional equipment for the unit arrived in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) on Wednesday. Hinds made this announcement during a joint select committee meeting on national security. The committee member, Jayanti Lutchmedial, inquired about the amount of equipment the unit possesses, considering that people can now obtain bail for any offense.

Hinds explained that the department has been proactive in acquiring more equipment to supplement its existing resources. He stated that the newly arrived equipment had been cleared by customs that morning, delivered to the office in the afternoon, and would undergo an audit before being added to the inventory. Hinds assured that the equipment would be put into service promptly.

When Lutchmedial asked for the specific number of devices available, referencing a judge’s previous mention of limited capacity in September 2022, Hinds mentioned that they could provide a number but had to consider how it would be presented in court.

Although Hinds did not disclose the quantity of devices received on Wednesday, he did mention that the unit had acquired 300 devices between 2021 and 2023. These devices come in the form of one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece units. Additionally, Hinds stated that they had supplemented the existing stock of 300 devices with an additional 50, bringing the total to 350. He specifically mentioned the incorporation of 50 additional home curfew units, indicating an increase in capacity to address future developments.
