Happy 69th Birthday, Rekha: Celebrating the Iconic Fashion Journey, from Kanjeevaram Sarees to Umrao Jaan's Anarkalis

Rekha, the timeless Bollywood diva, is celebrating her 69th birthday today. Her illustrious career in films, including iconic performances in movies like “Silsila,” “Umrao Jaan,” “Khoobsurat,” “Khoon Bhari Maang,” and “Aastha,” has left an enduring mark on Indian cinema. Beyond her acting prowess, Rekha is renowned for her impeccable sense of fashion, particularly in traditional attire, which has continued to inspire generations. Even in her late 60s, she remains a fashion icon, celebrated for her signature Kanjeevaram sarees and memorable style moments.

One remarkable instance of her fashion finesse was when she attended the Dior Fall 23 show by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Creative Director of Christian Dior, at the Gateway Of India. For the occasion, she chose a timeless Kanjeevaram silk saree in mauve and gold hues, elegantly paired with a matching half-sleeve blouse, gold and red bangles, a gold embellished potli bag, a Kundan necklace, jhumkis, statement rings, gajras, and heels. Her overall look was completed with a center-parted sleek bun, shimmery eye shadow, dark pink lip shade, and radiant skin. Her captivating kohl-lined gaze and graceful demeanor captured the essence of the 1981 film “Umrao Jaan,” a role for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress. In this film, she made the anarkali style synonymous with her name, wearing a lustrous silk anarkali adorned with emerald and pearl jewels, creating an iconic moment in Indian cinema.

Rekha’s fashion choices have also made waves in songs like “Kaisi Paheli Zindagani” from “Parineeta,” where she mesmerized audiences in a red and black embroidered net saree paired with an off-shoulder blouse. This ensemble became an inspiration for party wear for many years, and her sultry look was enhanced with bold red lips, a rose hair accessory, and net gloves.

Rekha is synonymous with silk sarees, and her wardrobe boasts a diverse collection, from Kanjeevaram silks to multicolored Benarasi weaves. She has effortlessly demonstrated how to carry heritage silk sarees with grace. Some of her favorite silk sarees have been worn during events, including a stunning turquoise and gold brocade drape at the NMACC Gala.

While Rekha is known for her love of Kanjeevarams and Benarasi sarees, she has also embraced experimentation with saree styles. In recent times, she has been seen in pant sarees at awards shows and Bollywood events. One example showcases her in a Manish Malhotra ivory saree featuring intricate embroidery and gold gota patti work, paired with a silk full-sleeved blouse, matching pants, embellished platform heels, kadhas, a potli bag, earrings, and bold red lip shade. Another instance portrays her in an ivory and gold brocade silk saree, paired with a matching blouse and pants, exhibiting her versatility and bold style choices.

Rekha’s influence on Indian fashion remains undeniable, and her ability to seamlessly blend traditional and contemporary styles has solidified her position as a timeless fashion icon. On her 69th birthday, her legacy in both film and fashion continues to inspire and captivate generations.
